Dependence of guided resonances on the structural parameters of terahertz photonic crystal slabs

چکیده
Using terahertz spectroscopy, we measure the normal-incidence transmission coefficient of photonic crystals consisting of a periodic lattice of air holes in a silicon slab. Sharp resonant features are observed in the transmission spectra due to coupling of the leaky photonic crystal modes, called guided resonances, to the continuum of free-space modes. The resonances show considerable sensitivity to the structural parameters of the slab, including the slab thickness. By varying each crystal parameter systematically, we study the dependence of the resonances on the geometry of the photonic crystal slabs. Even small changes in a parameter such as the slab thickness, for example, can lead to dramatic changes in the optical spectrum. We also compare the transmission spectrum of a photonic crystal slab with a hexagonal lattice to that of a slab with a square lattice. In most cases, the experimental results match very well with numerical simulations based on the finite element method. © 2008 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 160.5298, 300.6495.

Characterization of guided resonances in photonic crystal slabs using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy
We describe experimental studies of guided resonances in two-dimensional photonic crystal slabs using coherent single-cycle terahertz pulses. Our measurements directly reveal two stages of pulse transmission in the time domain: an initial pulse resulting from the direct transmission through the photonic crystal slab and a long-lived decaying tail resulting from the finite lifetime of guided res...
متن کاملGuided resonance in Photonic Crystals
The objective of this thesis research is to analyze the guided resonances in photonic crystal slabs. It introduces the different kinds of photonic crystals and focuses on photonic crystal slabs consisting of a square lattice of air holes. The guided resonances are created by the coupling between the guided modes above the light line and radiation modes. Specifically, we calculate the transmissi...
متن کاملExtraordinary wavelength reduction in terahertz graphene-cladded photonic crystal slabs
Photonic crystal slabs have been widely used in nanophotonics for light confinement, dispersion engineering, nonlinearity enhancement, and other unusual effects arising from their structural periodicity. Sub-micron device sizes and mode volumes are routine for silicon-based photonic crystal slabs, however spectrally they are limited to operate in the near infrared. Here, we show that two single...

We report on the first experimental evidence of guided resonances (GRs) in photonic crystal slabs based on aperiodically-ordered supercells. Using the Amman-Beenker (quasiperiodic, 8-fold symmetric) tiling geometry, we present our study on the fabrication, experimental characterization, and full-wave numerical simulation of two representative structures (with different filling parameters) opera...
متن کاملTwo-dimensional photonic crystal slabs in parallel-plate metal waveguides studied with terahertz time-domain spectroscopy
In this paper, we report our experimental study on two-dimensional photonic crystal slabs embedded inside parallel-plate metal waveguides, using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. We observe that the temporal response of the photonic crystal slabs is significantly dispersed, indicative of strong dispersion near the edges of the photonic band gap. In the frequency domain, we observe several gap...
